College Living & Self-Storage

You’ve been accepted to your dream college, signed up for classes, assigned a dorm room, and are ready to start on your education. You show up with your belongings to claim your space and discover that you don’t have as much room as you previously believed. And, worse, you have to vacate your dorm room at the beginning of summer.

Rather than carting around all your belongings between semesters, or overcrowding your space, you may be looking into a self-storage unit. But what should you know as a college student renting your first unit?

Plan Early

Self-storage is in high demand around college campus’ all over the United States. Smaller units, from 5×5 to 5×10, are especially desirable for college students. That is why we recommend calling and reserving a unit two to three months prior to the start of the semester. This is also a great time to ask your facility what specials are available. One month before you begin, contact your self-storage facility and re-confirm your reservation.

Know What You Need

It may be tempting to overpack for your life at college, but resist. College is a fun, however stressful, experience, and having to pack and unpack each semester will only add to the stress. Try to plan ahead with what you will need versus what you want to bring. This will make packing/unpacking easier and will downsize what you need to store in your unit.

Set Up AutoPay

Due dates are nothing new to students. Assignments, projects, and exams all take up space in your mind and schedule. By setting up automatic payments to your storage unit, you never have to worry about accruing various fees or getting locked out when you need your items most.

Purchase Insurance

Whatever you store, be sure that you take advantage of the insurance offered by your facility. Insurance provides peace of mind and protects your belongings should anything unexpected happen, like theft or natural disasters.
