Holiday Travel in 2021

|

Will you be traveling this holiday season? Whether you are visiting your family or you are this year's host, starting now to prepare for the holiday weekend can save you from a stressful couple of weeks.

Start Early

Starting your plans early might seem like an obvious thing to do, but doing so includes more than deciding what you’re going to serve on Thanksgiving Day (though that is important!). The earlier that you book your flight and rental car, the better. If you are hosting, consider starting cooking and freezing your baked goods several days in advance. Being prepared prevents last-minute meltdowns and emergencies.

Expect Longer Delays & Canceled Flights

One of the biggest frustrations in holiday travel is delays and canceled flights. While we might understand a cancellation due to severe weather, any delay in your holiday plans is frustrating. There are other factors to consider this year when it comes to a canceled flight. These include staff shortages, technology meltdowns, and even disruptions from fellow passengers. So what can you do?

First, plan for extra time. Fly in a day early, arrive three or more hours before your flight, and try to book earlier flight times since delays are not uncommon and build onto each other later in the day.

Second, if your flight is canceled, the airline may have hidden perks for you. This may include providing snacks through the delays/cancellation up to a reimbursement of the cost of a hotel room. Make sure to check your airline's policies for more details.

Lastly, know that if a flight is canceled by the airline, you are entitled to a full refund – regardless if the ticket you purchased was non-refundable.

Know Which Days to Avoid

Typically, the day before Thanksgiving and the Sunday after Thanksgiving are the worst days to travel. Thanksgiving Day, however, is not nearly as busy. Do a little research when planning what days to leave and return.

While about 1% of recent flights have been canceled in recent weeks, that totals to about 50-80 flights per day. This number may increase over Thanksgiving weekend, depending on weather and staffing shortages. So, it is important to give yourself – and others – a little extra patience and kindness. Take your favorite book, prepare your best music playlist, and treat yourself to your favorite snacks.

And most of all: Have a very Happy Thanksgiving weekend!
