Spring Cleaning 2021 – Part One

Main WP • March 30, 2021

Is your home feeling a little more cluttered than usual? Spring 2021 is unique from previous years since most of us have been spending a lot more time at home than we usually would. In this three-part series, we’ll give you some tips for removing the household clutter, spring cleaning, and organizing.

Don’t Think Big Picture

Decluttering can be a stressful and overwhelming process, so taking it one step at a time will help lessen the anxiety of knowing what to keep, donate, or throw away. Even starting with just 5 minutes per day can add up quickly. You’ll be surprised how much you can accomplish taking it step by step.

Understanding the “Why”

What is your purpose in decluttering? Are you trying to make clear out space in your home? Or do you simply want to lessen the amount of cleaning that you need to do? Knowing your “why” is vital to decluttering.

The saying “less is more” truly applies to decluttering. You will feel less stress and more satisfaction in keeping only the items that are useful to you. You may notice less debt and more financial freedom as you change your spending and saving habits to only allow those things into your life that bring value.

Take the Challenge

Start with the 1-1-1 challenge: each day select 1 item to keep, 1 item to give away, and 1 item to throw away. When this becomes easy, up the number to 2-2-2, and so on until you have gone through everything in your home.

Take Before and After Photographs

It’s inspiring to see your progress and the best way to do this is to take pictures before and after you have decluttered. You will find a new perspective as you lessen the number of things just taking up space.

When It’s Hard to Let Go

After you have decluttered, if you still find that there are too many items in your home, we recommend putting the items that do not have an immediate use into a storage unit. Why? Once in a storage unit, you will be able to tell what items you really need and which ones you don’t. Make sure to put everything in boxes! When you return a month later, if you can’t remember what’s in the box, it might be a good idea to donate the items at that point. The best part is that Towne Storage offers month to month specials to keep costs down while you try this out!
