One of my favorite commercials is the one that Antiques Roadshow put out several years ago. A gentleman brings in a blanket that’s been sitting on the back of his chair for appraisal and the screen changes to many different people trying to guess the worth of this item. The Navajo blanket was appraised at a whopping $500,000 (you can watch the commercial here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91sHDoufhAg).
Antiques Roadshow is full of history lessons and surprises, and is often very entertaining to watch. Many of the heirlooms were passed down through several generations, while others we purchased at yard sales. And it so happens that some are even found in abandoned storage units too.
John Norris of Washington state collects and sells antiques. He scours the area for rare finds and has gained the title “the Whidbey Picker.” Among his finds include Samurai stirrups, an 1881 Marlin rifle, and most recently, a 17th century ship’s swivel cannon.
The cannon is not very large, coming in at a mere 90 pounds (“mere” compared to a similar cannon weighing in at 900 pounds). This lightweight cannon would be attached to various bases around the ships railing, making it a portable and formidable weapon during a fight at sea.
