Winter Moving Tips and Tricks

Winter Moving Tips and Tricks

|

Moving is a stressful process on the best of days. During the winter months it can seem overwhelming with additional challenges like snow, ice, and cold to deal with, not to mention all the holiday shopping and family gatherings.

Needless to say, homeowners have their hands full. So, what can you do to make the moving process easier during this season?

  1. Plan ahead where you can

Whether you know you’re moving weeks in advance or just days, take time to plan out your move. With more time to prepare, you can sort, pack and store away items that you will not immediately or frequently be needed. Examples might be: Spring/Summer clothing, furniture, collectables, and more. Remember to label boxes along the way so if you do need something, it will be faster to find!

When possible, store non-essential belongings ahead of time so that the big moving day only has to deal with essential items. This will save time and energy.

  1. Watch the weather

You may not have control over the weather, but you can prepare for it. Warm clothing, comfortable shoes, and de-iced pathways can help make moving during bad weather safer. While salting a path works well, it can be tracked indoors where it can damage flooring and leave a bit of a mess. Instead, try no slip mats or laying down cardboard to prevent slipping.

  1. Use plastic covers to protect belongings

Some items can be irreparably damaged by the wet, like furniture and mattresses. Cover these pieces with plastic coverings will protect and increase the life of your belongings. Lining boxes with plastic garbage bags add little to no weight yet provides waterproofing benefits.

  1. Double pack fragile items

Bubble wrap and tissue paper both help protect fragile items like dishes. If you have access to specific use boxes and inserts (like a dish saver pack at Towne Storage), this can add another layer of protection to your belongings.
